I first came across this wonderful piece of Stefanie Bruce's in an alleyway behind Queen St West as part of Toronto's Summerworks Festival. I'm excited to have her at Just Call Me Jack. Her show: 'Whisper Only What is True" opens on Sunday, October 18th 2015 from 6-9pm with warm drinks and snacks.
Here are a few words from Stefanie:
Whisper Only What Is True is an installation, which includes an experiential sculpture, and smaller two-dimensional works. The sculpture component of this installation consists of two booths connected via conversation tubes. The intention behind this piece is to reveal the limits of wired technologies, as the booths afford each participant a unique autonomy from the need to self-idealize by providing intimate space where they may be inclined to speak more playfully, vulnerably or candidly.
Whispering is encouraged.
In 2012 I presented this work as a performance and installation for SummerWorks Performance Festival, titled Private Roads. With this work I sought to make vulnerability more accessible by offering participants an opportunity to reveal their thoughts—from simple observations to more personal reflections and life stories. The result of which afforded both the participant and myself an opportunity for catharsis and a greater capacity for honesty.
